Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Which Is the Better Long-Term Choice?
Missing teeth can affect more than your smile; they can impact your confidence, speech, eating habits, and long-term oral health. This guide...

The Cavitron is an ultrasonic scaling device used during routine cleanings and periodontal therapy at Elevated Smiles Dentistry in Bel Air, MD. By combining high-frequency sound waves with a gentle water spray, it removes hardened tartar and bacterial deposits from teeth and below the gumline more thoroughly and more comfortably than manual hand instruments alone.

Modern Tech
Precise, efficient care
The Cavitron uses magnetostrictive or piezoelectric technology to vibrate its tip at ultrasonic frequencies, typically between 25,000 and 30,000 cycles per second. These vibrations break up and dislodge calculus deposits on the tooth surface and root without requiring the scraping pressure of traditional hand scalers. A continuous water spray simultaneously flushes away loosened debris, cools the tip, and creates a process called cavitation, where tiny bubbles form and collapse at the tooth surface, disrupting bacterial cell walls. The result is a cleaner tooth surface achieved with less manual pressure.
Ultrasonic scaling offers several advantages over hand scaling alone. It removes heavy tartar deposits more efficiently, which reduces treatment time. The water lavage action flushes bacteria out of periodontal pockets more thoroughly than dry instruments. Many patients experience less sensitivity during the procedure because the lighter touch of ultrasonic vibration requires less pressure than manual scraping. For patients with periodontal disease, combining ultrasonic and hand scaling achieves better pocket debridement than either approach alone.
The Cavitron is part of routine prophylaxis cleanings for patients who have moderate to heavy tartar buildup. It is also a primary tool during scaling and root planing for patients being treated for gum disease, where thorough removal of calculus from deep periodontal pockets is essential. Our dental hygienist determines how much of each cleaning is done with ultrasonic versus hand instruments based on the amount and location of buildup and your individual sensitivity levels. Most patients tolerate ultrasonic scaling very comfortably.
