What Implant Restoration and Repair Services Are Available?

The most common restorative need is crown replacement, where the ceramic crown on top of an implant has chipped, cracked, or worn significantly. Dr. Englander can design and mill a replacement crown using in-office CAD/CAM technology in many cases, producing a same-day result. Loose or failed abutments, which are the connector pieces between the implant post and the crown, can be retightened or replaced. If the implant crown has become loose, the cause must be diagnosed before the crown is re-cemented or the screw is retightened. In some cases, impressions are needed to reorder a replacement prosthetic from a lab.

What Are the Signs That an Implant Restoration Needs Attention?

If your implant crown feels loose, clicks or moves when you bite, has a visible chip or fracture, causes pain or sensitivity when biting, or if you notice increased bleeding or swelling around the base of the implant, schedule an appointment. Some issues that appear to be crown problems are actually signs of peri-implantitis or bone loss at the implant site, which require a different and more urgent response. Dr. Englander will take an X-ray to differentiate between a prosthetic issue and a biological complication at your appointment.

Can Dr. Englander Repair an Implant Placed by Another Dentist?

Yes. Implant systems are generally standardized enough that Dr. Englander can evaluate, service, and restore implants placed at other practices in most cases. You will need to bring any records or documentation you have about your original implant, including the brand and implant diameter if known, as this helps identify the correct abutment and prosthetic components. If the original implant records are unavailable, Dr. Englander will take measurements and imaging to identify the system before ordering parts.

How Long Does an Implant Crown Last Before Needing Replacement?

Implant crowns typically last 10 to 15 years with normal use, though many last significantly longer. Longevity depends on where the crown is in the mouth, whether you grind your teeth, the material the crown is made from, and how well you maintain it. Zirconia crowns are generally more durable than porcelain-fused-to-metal for posterior implants. Wearing a nightguard if you grind significantly extends the life of implant crowns. Annual X-rays and clinical checks at maintenance visits allow Dr. Englander to spot crown wear before it becomes a functional problem.

My implant crown just fell off. What should I do?

Keep the crown if you can find it and call us immediately at (410) 893-3613. In most cases we can re-cement or re-attach it the same day. Do not try to re-cement it yourself with household glue.

How much does it cost to replace a dental implant crown?

Crown replacement costs depend on the material and whether the crown can be made in-office or requires a lab. Dr. Englander will provide a cost estimate after examining the implant and existing crown. Some insurance plans provide coverage for implant crown replacement after a waiting period.

Does a loose implant crown mean the implant is failing?

Not necessarily. Loose crowns are often caused by a loose screw or degraded cement rather than implant failure. However, it needs to be evaluated promptly. An X-ray will confirm whether the implant is stable in the bone.

Can a cracked implant crown be repaired or does it need replacement?

Small chips on all-ceramic crowns can sometimes be polished smooth. Significant cracks that compromise the structural integrity of the crown require replacement. Dr. Englander will assess the damage and recommend the most conservative approach.

How often should implants be checked by a dentist?

At least once a year, and ideally at every six-month checkup. Dr. Englander checks implant stability, probes the surrounding gum tissue, and takes periodic X-rays to monitor bone levels around each implant.
