Dental Implants vs. Dentures: Which Is the Better Long-Term Choice?
Missing teeth can affect more than your smile; they can impact your confidence, speech, eating habits, and long-term oral health. This guide...

A child’s first dental experience shapes how they feel about dental care for the rest of their life. At Elevated Smiles Dentistry in Bel Air, MD, we take that seriously. Dr. Joshua Englander and our team create a calm, friendly environment that helps children feel comfortable and curious rather than anxious, so every checkup becomes a positive experience they are willing to repeat.

Happy Kids
Gentle, fun visits
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child’s first dental visit happen within six months of the first tooth appearing, or by age one, whichever comes first. Early visits familiarize children with the dental environment before any significant treatment is needed. Dr. Englander checks the developing bite, looks for early signs of tooth decay, evaluates any teething concerns, and gives parents guidance on age-appropriate oral hygiene, diet, and habits like pacifier use and thumb sucking.
A typical checkup appointment includes a gentle cleaning by our dental hygienist to remove plaque and tartar buildup, a visual examination of each tooth for signs of decay, assessment of bite development and spacing, evaluation of gum health, age-appropriate X-rays to check between teeth and below the gumline, a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel, and a review of home care habits and dietary recommendations with both the child and parents. For younger children, the visit also includes a conversation about any habits that might affect tooth development.
Most children benefit from dental checkups every six months. This frequency allows Dr. Englander to monitor tooth development, catch cavities early when they are small and easy to treat, and reinforce good oral hygiene habits at a consistent interval. Children who are at higher risk for cavities because of diet, dry mouth, or a history of frequent decay may benefit from more frequent visits. As children grow into teenagers, the frequency is reassessed based on their cavity risk profile and orthodontic needs.
Our team uses tell-show-do technique, explaining each step before doing it, so children know exactly what to expect at every moment. We work at the child’s pace and never rush. Positive reinforcement throughout the appointment makes the experience feel like an achievement rather than an ordeal. For children with significant dental anxiety or who need more extensive treatment, nitrous oxide is available to help them relax while remaining fully awake and comfortable. We believe that a child who leaves our office feeling good about their visit is a child who will keep their teeth healthy for life.
