Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small, comfortable mask placed over your nose. It reaches the brain within minutes and produces a pleasant feeling of relaxation and reduced anxiety. You remain fully awake and aware throughout the procedure and can respond normally to Dr. Englander. Once the mask is removed at the end of your appointment, the effects clear from your system within five to ten minutes. Most patients feel completely normal within 15 minutes and are able to drive themselves home and return to normal activity immediately.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Feel Like?

Most patients describe a warm, tingling sensation in the hands and feet, a general feeling of calm and wellbeing, and a sense of lightness or mild euphoria. Time passes more quickly. Sounds in the room may seem more distant. You stay conscious throughout and can speak, follow instructions, and let Dr. Englander know at any point if you need a break. The experience is comfortable and non-disorienting. Some patients feel mildly drowsy. Nausea is uncommon but can occur, particularly if you eat a large meal immediately before your appointment.

When Is Nitrous Oxide Used at Elevated Smiles?

Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
