Do I need to prepare anything before a same day crown appointment?

No special preparation is needed. The appointment is similar to any crown procedure. Plan for about two hours in the office. If you are opting for sedation, arrange for someone to drive you home.

Does getting a same day crown hurt?

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so the experience is the same as any crown preparation. You may feel some sensitivity or mild soreness for a day or two after, which is completely normal.

Can all teeth be treated with CAD/CAM?

What Is Same Day Dentistry and How Does CAD/CAM Work?

CAD/CAM stands for Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing. Dr. Englander takes a digital scan of your tooth, designs your custom restoration on screen, and sends the design directly to an in-office milling machine. The machine carves your crown, veneer, or inlay from a solid ceramic block in about 15 minutes. Dr. Englander then checks the fit, makes any final adjustments, and bonds the permanent restoration in place. The whole process from preparation to placement takes about two hours.

What Are the Advantages of Same Day Dentistry?

The most obvious advantage is convenience. One appointment instead of two saves you time, eliminates the need for additional time off work, and means less time in the dental chair. Beyond convenience, CAD/CAM restorations are precisely fitted using digital scans rather than traditional impressions, which are prone to distortion. The all-ceramic materials used match the color and translucency of your natural teeth closely. And because there is no temporary crown, there is no risk of it falling off or irritating your gums between appointments.

How Long Do CAD/CAM Crowns Last?

CAD/CAM ceramic crowns are milled from high-quality zirconia or feldspathic porcelain blocks and typically last 10 to 15 years with proper care. This is comparable to traditionally lab-fabricated crowns. The key factors that affect longevity are the same as with any restoration: maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding biting hard objects, and keeping up with regular checkups. If you grind or clench your teeth, Dr. Englander may recommend a custom nightguard to protect your investment.

Is Same Day Dentistry Covered by Insurance?

Same day dental crowns and restorations are covered by most dental insurance plans to the same extent as traditional lab-fabricated restorations. Insurance coverage is based on what the procedure is, not how quickly it is completed. Most plans cover approximately 50 percent of crown costs after your deductible.
